Team of the Century

Musman, Alex
Defender

Born in Russia
Played 1988-2000

A younger member of the team of the century but nevertheless a worthy entry. Alex came to the club as a seventeen year old Russian born New Zealand immigrant and immediately made an impact. He was a rugged defender and brilliant marker. His opponents never got the better of him. He also had an excellent ability to score important goals coming from deep positions at the most vital times. His most memorable moment was in the 1991-92 Victorian Carnival where he managed to score the all important equaliser in the final minutes of a 3-3 draw with NSW Maccabi – which gave Victoria Maccabi their second consecutive gold medal after being down 0-3 at half-time.

Rabinowitz, Greig

Played 1992-2008

Greig Rabinowitz captained the club for many years and has been a four time winner of the clubs best and fairest. He is the ultimate player who has grown to become one of the club’s finest leaders and morale builders. He is a player who leads by example with his fearless approach, speed off the mark and close ball control. He has represented Australia at the Maccabiah Games in 1993. He is undoubtedly one of the best players the club has ever had.

 

Scrobogna, Justin

Played 1993-2010

Justin came to the club in unusual circumstances after he was plucked from obscurity by Andrew Freund while playing at Croydon City in the Victorian Premier League. He is the only Maccabi player to have won both the Victorian Soccer Federation Player of the Year and Top Goal Scorer Awards – which  he achieved in 1999 while playing for Maccabi in Provisional League Division Three. He was instrumental in the clubs promotion that year and is currently a key player for the team in their pursuit of another promotion in Season 2002. Justin is a magnificently skilful player who possesses a cracking shot and great understanding of the game. He has represented Australia at two Maccabiah games. In the last games in 2001 he played in every game as a defender showing his great versatility in the teams best ever finish at the games – coming fourth.

Boris Seroshtan

Born in Lviv, Ukraine

Played from 1993

Boris came to the club, from Russia via Israel, with impeccable credentials having played at the highest levels in his home country. He is one of the most knowledgeable and technically proficient players ever to have played for the club. Unfortunately, a series of several injuries prevented him from playing for the club as much as he would have liked but he has managed to win a club Best & Fairest Award and he has also represented Australia at the Maccabiah Games in 1997. His strongest ability was his reading of the game and time on the ball. He was Director of Junior Coaching at the club for over 20 years. Boris also has an AFC / FFA ‘A Licence’ Coaching qualification and is Football Victoria's Technical Director.

Bloch, Steven

Midfielder
Born in Melbourne, Australia
Played 1979-1991

A player with natural ability and skills who possessed a brilliant left foot and excellent visual awareness. His ability to run at defences and beat defenders with excellent skill, made him one of the best and most graceful players to watch. A natural goal scoring midfielder Bloch was classy, hardworking and rarely gave the ball away.

Freund, Andrew

Played from 1984

Probably the best home-grown soccer player ever to have played for the club. His natural athleticism and winning attitude made him one of the most important players in any Maccabi team. He represented Australia at two Maccabiah games, played at National and Premier League level and helped guide Victoria Maccabi to their only two carnival victories against Maccabi New South Wales. A player with unrivalled brilliance in the air, powerful speed off the mark, and an excellent player who led by example and tormented opposition teams. A club Best & Fairest winner in his 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, Andrew was Senior Coach for 5-years (2008 to 2012) and has been Director of Football for over 10-years.

Serry, Philip

1978-1995

Phil Serry was one of the most fearless soccer players ever to take the field for the club. His ability to lead from the last line and save the team repeatedly when everyone else was beaten was a feature of his career. Philip gave his all every time he stepped out on the ground and his ability to prepare himself for games was unquestionably the most professional of any goalkeeper to have played for the club. The team always had a better chance of winning when Phil was between the sticks. His bravery and eyes on the ball approach legendary.

Wein, Bradley

Born in Melbourne Australia
1980-1984

In choosing defender for the team of the century, Bradley Wein was recognised without peer with regards to the classic features of a centre back who could not be intimidated. Bradley’s strength was that he made the most of his strong natural build and provided a powerful presence in the centre of a very efficient Maccabi defence. His ability to mark out dangerous forwards coupled with his brilliance in the air and competitive approach, made him the model centre back and a worthy entry in this team.

Zolotarev, Eddie

Born in Moscow, Russia
1985-2001

Eddie Zolotarev came to the club from Russia after playing with Caulfield City in the Victorian Premier League. He is one of the clubs longest serving players who was the major cog in the teams midfield for over a decade. Eddie played as a youngster for Spartak Moscow in the Russian Premier League in front of crowds of 70,000+ at the tender age of 17. The strength of his game was his ability to set up the play time and time again in masterful fashion. His natural ability coupled with his dedication to the club made him a most memorable player. Eddie represented Australia at the Maccabiah Games in 1997 where he excelled in the key central midfield position. Eddie also coached the Maccabi Reserve side for many seasons after a long and distinguished career. Eddie has also been Senior Assistant Coach at the club.

Barrett, Clive
Midfielder
Born in South Africa
Played 1980-1981

Gifted central midfielder who possessed an uncanny ability to change a game with his brilliant passing game, unparalleled vision, deadly goal-scoring ability and sublime skills. Arguably the best player to have ever played for the club. He helped guide Maccabi to two Amateur championships, the Amateur Cup and Australian Amateur Cup.

Diamond, Michael

Born in Melbourne, Australia

Michael “Dixie” Diamond was one of the founding members of the club. As a player he excelled in the defensive position with his ability to read the game and close check opposition forwards. A stylish player who could pass equally well on both sides of his body.

Efron, David
Midfielder
1978-1985
Born in Melbourne, Australia

David Efron was another foundation player – who came into the team via a stint with Hakoah Ajax Under 19’s. David was a gifted midfielder who unfortunately was cut down prematurely by injury. He had an excellent ability to control a game and was one of the major contributors in creating the right sort of atmosphere around the club off the field as well as on. David later went on to have an excellent coaching career with Old Scotch – guiding them to four league promotions.

Fridman, Danny

1978-1984
Born in Israel

Danny was one of the most highly credentialed players when he was approached by Maccabi to join them in their foundation year from the State League in 1978. He played for, captained and coached the club at various stages and continues today as the club’s thirds coach. Danny has been an impeccable club supporter throughout the years and as a player he was one of the best prepared and strong players the club ever had. As a coach he demanded the best from the team and was responsible for lifting the team to cup and championship honours in their foundation years. he held the teams goal scoring record with 31 goals until 2002.

Harel, Oran

1997-2008

Oran Harel is the youngest member of the team of the century and a worthy entrant, a deadly striker with a career total of over 300 goals. He’s won both the club top goal scorer award and league top goal scorer award on numerous occasions as well as holding the record for the most goals scored in a single game (7) and in a season (38). Harels other achievements include representing Australia in two Maccabiahs, winning both the Victorian Soccer federation Player of the Year and Top Goal Scorer Award, Multiple Club B&F awards well as Multiple Victorian Soccer Federation league leading goal scorer in various divisions. Harel has also played in the Victorian Premier League.

Moshe, Avi
Goalkeeper
1987-1994
Born in Israel

Avi was an extraordinary good goalkeeper who was able to stop goals and make the position look easy. He was a great shot stopper with his great ability to position himself in the right positions. He represented Australia at the Maccabiah Games in 1993.

Munz, Jonathan
Midfielder
1979-1990
Born in Melbourne, Australia

Jonathan was a talented midfielder who had an excellent work rate and great fighting abilities. He was a devoted club man and provided the team with an excellent option wide on the flanks. He represented Australia at three Maccabiah Games. His career was unfortunately cut short by a bad back injury, however he has continued to be the major benefactor behind the club and its junior program.

Sher, Michael

1984-1988
Born in South Africa

Michael was one of the finest strikers the club has ever had. He was instrumental in taking Hakoah-Maccabi to championship honours in 1986 with his 28 goals. He possessed the finest finishing ability the club has ever seen. His career was unfortunately dogged by a persistent knee injury which prematurely ended his career. A fantastic header of the ball and great at hold-up play, Michael was great Centre Forward.

Gulko, Fima
Midfielder
Born in Russia
Played 1983-1994

A midfield general who came to this country late in his soccer career but nevertheless made an impact from day one. He was a powerful player with great stamina and vision in the central midfield. He was a tremendous tackler and was never beaten by any opponent. His ability to dominate games under pressure and take excellent free-kicks, were a feature of his career. He also was the first Russian player to play for the club in the early wave of migration and until this day he remains a loyal supporter and important link between all players and members of the club.
